How To Effortlessly Achieve Your Health And Life Goals: This Is The Real “Secret”
“WOW, what a view!”
I am standing on an Incan ruin, overlooking the city of Cusco, Peru…surrounded by towering Andean peaks.
It is cloudy. But across the valley the sun has broken through, lighting the incredible landscape with shafts of golden light.
I’ve just finished a strength workout. At altitude. And I’m exhausted. But at the same time I’m exhilarated — literally bubbling over with positive emotions — because I’ve just realized something. Well, actually two things:
- This view is flipping gorgeous.
- I’m taking insane amounts of action to improve my life. And it’s not even hard! In fact, it’s as though I’ve been sucked into some “vortex of positivity” that has taken control of my mind and is pulling me towards excellence and awesomeness.
After climbing back down the mountain, I start to think about why this is. Because, I mean, it hasn’t ALWAYS been this way. That’s for damn sure. In fact, not long ago I was what you’d call a “motivation wreck.” I’d spend hours just thinking about what I should be doing, cursing myself for my complete lack of focus and discipline, sitting in my room, staring at my computer, and mindlessly watching “I’m On A Boat” for the ten trillionth time.
But NOW…everything’s different. I’m kicking ass. I’m working out consistently. I’m eating healthy. I’m reading a book a week. I’m creating new training programs and building my business…
But — why?
No, seriously. Why?
At first, I didn’t know. I just felt like something had “clicked.” Like my internal resistance had melted away. But I couldn’t put a finger on exactly what was the catalyst or WHY it had taken so long to actually happen. Today though…I think I’ve figured it out. I know what caused my “turnaround.” And in this post I’d like to share this insight with you…so that YOU can leverage it to transform your own life.
The Foundational Concept
The foundational concept behind this entire post is simple. It might even be something you’ve heard before. But, unless you are already performing at a high level, it’s unlikely that you’ve fully internalized it…and taken the necessary action to activate it’s power in your life.
Here’s the concept:
Success begets success. Failure begets failure. And even small progress can initiate an “upward spiral” or positive feedback loop that fuels future progress and achievement. And once you have seen enough measurable results…there will come a time where you’ll BUY IN completely. Where you will believe 100% that by taking specific actions, YOU have the power to change your life. And any remaining resistance will simply fall away.
Read that last paragraph again. Even a few times. I know this is a bit “heady” and it’ll likely take a few readings to fully grasp.
To make sure you fully understand this idea….there’s an example I’d like to share with you. It’s a bit “extreme”…but I think it does a good job of explaining just how powerful this concept truly is.
Why Smoking Crack Actually Makes Sense
Imagine you’re living in the inner city. The ghetto. And all you see around you is struggle and suffering. No happy ending. No hope. No “light at the end of the tunnel.” Just a long and painful existence in a cruel world. Imagine you’ve grown up this way…and this is all you’ve ever known.
Now imagine someone walks up and places two objects in front of you:
- A book like “The 7 Mysteries of Life.”
- A crack pipe.
Which one will you choose?
Well…there’s no saying. But in this situation, I imagine you’d be much more likely to choose the crack pipe for one simple reason: You don’t believe that reading the book will help you. You can’t see that the information contained within its pages can help you build a better future for yourself. You haven’t “bought in”…and for this reason…doing drugs and feeling good now is a much more appealing choice.
Because look: In order to get yourself to take action and do the things you know will transform your life, you need to BELIEVE that something good is going to happen as a result. You need to “buy in.” Because if you don’t, you’ll have no reason to do them. You’ll have no urgency. And you’ll find yourself lost in a “daze” of distraction, pessimism and — ultimately — failure.
On the other side of the spectrum, once you “buy in” to the idea that your actions will pay off, well, taking action is easy! It’s an “upward spiral.” And you’ll find yourself in the position I’m in now: writing thousands of words a day, crushing my workouts, reading like a madman, eating the best possible food…and loving it. CRAVING MORE. Jumping out of bed and passionately moving in the direction of my dreams.
And here’s the cool thing:
In order to reach this place of optimism and “invincibility”…all you need to do is stick with stuff for a little while. Just long enough to reach what I call “escape velocity” — the point where it takes no effort to complete the practices that’ll eventually get you where you want to go. In my experience, this usually takes around 60-90 days. Maybe more. Sometimes less.
But there’s a shortcut.
And I’ve already written a post about it.
It’s called a ritual…and basically it’s a collection of life-changing practices that you complete back-to-back, in a sequence, every single day. Mine includes natural movement, meditation, deep nutrition and a cold shower. It’s super powerful. And it creates a “wave” of momentum that I ride throughout my entire day. It also creates immediate, tangible results — which re-instills the belief that I am capable of affecting positive change. And so the upward spiral continues…
So. Here’s your action plan:
If you struggle with motivation, discipline, or getting off your butt and actually doing something…I want you to formulate a ritual and commit to stick with it for 30 days. Just thirty. And it doesn’t have to be anything crazy or complex. It can be as simple as drinking a smoothie or doing fifty pushups every morning. The key is to select something that:
- You’ll actually do.
- Will give you tangible results in a 30 day period and fuel your emerging upward spiral by showing you that you can make progress AND if you continue to take action your life will continue to improve.
Then, once you’ve got a ritual, do it. Without fail. For the entire 30 day period. Understanding that, while it might be difficult to begin with, if you stick with it you’ll reach a point where any (and all) resistance will fall away and it’ll become automatic. If you stick with it, you’ll begin to believe, you’ll BUY IN…and your life will begin to transform.
Trust me. It’s inevitable.
The Real Secret
If you’re reading this blog, chances are you’ve watched the movie “The Secret.” Or at least you’ve heard about it. It was popular a few years ago, featured a bunch of different gurus and made the “Law of Attraction” a mainstream phrase.
I watched it.
And, overall, I thought it was pretty good. I like the premise. And I agree that we attract whatever we focus on. However…I feel like the movie misguided a lot of people into believing that all they need to do to transform their lives is think about it, believe that it will happen, and wait for some mysterious check to arrive in the mail.
And if you talk to anyone who’s achieved a high level of success in any area of life, they will tell you that it didn’t come from some magic “affirmations” or positive thinking. That may have been a PART of it. That may have been the beginning, but typically it’s a clear intention COMBINED with massive action, day after day, that yields results.
So. You want a six pack, a new car, a thriving business or a disease free body?
Great. Understand there is no magic pill. Leverage the power of “buying in” and the “upward spiral.” Create a ritual. Then take small steps every day…and before you know it you will be standing on a mountain somewhere wondering what the hell happened.

P.S. One of the biggest questions I hear from people is…”I want to do XYZ, but I just don’t have any motivation. How can I get more motivated?” If this sounds like you, you need to watch this. It’s a video by Joel Runyon of impossible HQ, and it explains why motivation is, in fact, a myth.
P.P.S. Next Wednesday I’m embarking on a BIG adventure. And I have a (pretty crazy) challenge that I think I’m going to attempt. I’ll tell you all the details in a few days…
